LPC Pro vs EssentialsChat vs VentureChat
EssentialsX Chat and VentureChat are two long-established free options for Minecraft chat; LPC Pro is a paid alternative that bundles formatting, moderation, and Discord bridging into one plugin. This guide compares all three honestly — including where the free options are the right call — so you can pick based on what your server actually needs.
What each plugin actually is
EssentialsX Chat — often still called EssentialsChat — is the chat-formatting module of the EssentialsX suite: free, GPL-licensed open source, and installed alongside the main EssentialsX plugin, which it requires. It covers the classics well: prefixes, suffixes, and colors pulled from your permissions plugin, per-group chat formats, and a local-chat radius with shout (!) and question (?) overrides for players who need to speak globally. Recent releases have begun adding MiniMessage rich-text support, and the project is actively maintained — version 2.22.0 shipped in May 2026.
VentureChat is a free, GPLv3-licensed chat plugin by Aust1n46, first released on SpigotMC in 2014. Its core idea is channels: players join and leave the channels they want, each channel gets its own colors, private channels are supported, and networks can bridge channels across BungeeCord or Velocity proxies. It also ships hex color and JSON hover formatting, a configurable word filter, timed per-channel mutes, and a moderation GUI. It is still maintained, though at a slower cadence — the most recent release, 3.8.0, dates from August 2025 as of this writing.
LPC Pro is our premium chat plugin: native MiniMessage formatting, AI-powered moderation, a built-in Discord bridge, chat bubbles, six chat games, achievements, a chat shop, and a full staff toolkit in a single jar. It costs €14.99 (price at time of writing) as a one-time purchase with free lifetime updates, and runs on Spigot and Paper 1.17 through 1.21.11, with Purpur and Folia also supported. There is also LPC, our free plugin built on the same formatting engine, for servers that only need the core.
Feature comparison
The table below sticks to what we could verify from each project’s official pages and release notes as of July 2026, plus our own product documentation for LPC Pro. We would rather leave a cell vague than guess.
Two notes on reading it fairly. First, EssentialsX Chat is deliberately narrow: it is a formatting module, and much of what LPC Pro or VentureChat bundle is simply outside its scope rather than a missing promise. Second, version freshness is a snapshot — EssentialsX released 2.22.0 in May 2026, LPC Pro 4.0.0 was last updated in April 2026, and VentureChat 3.8.0 dates from August 2025.

Where LPC Pro genuinely differs
Most chat filters match keywords. LPC Pro runs messages through an AI filter asynchronously instead: chat appears instantly, toxic messages are deleted after detection, staff get real-time alerts, and the AI teaches the local swear filter new words over time. It requires an OpenAI API key that you supply, with rate limiting and response caching built in to keep API costs down; keyword-based filtering still works without the key. Neither EssentialsX Chat nor VentureChat advertises anything comparable.
The second real difference is consolidation. A typical free setup pairs a formatting plugin with separate mute, filter, and Discord-bridge plugins. LPC Pro is designed to replace EssentialsChat, ChatManager, VentureChat, LiteBans chat handling, and a DiscordSRV bridge outright — the Discord side is built in with no extra bridge plugin required, though DiscordSRV is supported if you already run it. That is also why running LPC Pro alongside EssentialsX Chat or VentureChat is not recommended: two plugins handling the same chat events causes duplicate messages and broken hover and click actions.
- Chat bubbles — Floating text above players using native TextDisplay entities, no resource pack — requires Minecraft 1.19.4 or newer.
- Games and achievements — Six built-in chat games plus an achievement system, with leaderboards and command-based rewards.
- Chat shop — Players buy colors, tags, and perks through a GUI using Vault economy or the built-in points system.
- One-time pricing — €14.99 once (price at time of writing) with free lifetime updates — no subscription to cancel.
The honest trade-offs
Both competitors are free and battle-tested, and for a lot of servers that settles it. If all you need is rank prefixes and message colors, EssentialsX Chat does that job well at zero cost — and our own free LPC plays in the same bracket. Paying for LPC Pro only makes sense if you will actually use the moderation, Discord, and engagement features.
Community and track record favor the free options. EssentialsX is the modern continuation of the long-running Essentials suite and is still actively developed; VentureChat has a version history stretching back to 2014. In our experience, both have far more third-party tutorials and community answers floating around than any premium chat plugin, ours included. Both are also open source, which matters if you audit plugins or maintain forks — on our side, the free LPC is open source, while LPC Pro is sold commercially.
There are practical constraints on our side too. The AI moderation depends on an OpenAI API key — an external account and a small ongoing API cost, which the product FAQ estimates at under $5 a month for a 100-player server — while the keyword filter runs without it. LPC Pro requires Minecraft 1.17 or newer and chat bubbles need 1.19.4+, whereas EssentialsX still supports servers back to 1.8.8 and the free LPC reaches back to 1.7.10. On the other side, VentureChat’s slower release cadence is worth watching if you update to new Minecraft versions at launch — its latest release was August 2025 as of this writing.
To be explicit about who should not buy LPC Pro: servers that only want prefixes and colors, servers on Minecraft versions older than 1.17, strictly zero-budget projects, and admins who require an open-source-only stack. For all four, one of the free options — including our own — is the better call.
Which should you choose?
There is no single right answer here — match the plugin to the server you actually run.
- Choose EssentialsX Chat if — You already run the EssentialsX suite and need rank prefixes, colors, and local chat with no budget and minimal setup.
- Choose VentureChat if — Your server or network lives on channels — staff, trade, local, cross-server — and you want free moderation basics like timed mutes and a word filter on top.
- Choose LPC Pro if — You want formatting, AI moderation, Discord sync, and player-engagement features in one plugin, and would rather pay €14.99 once (price at time of writing) than maintain a stack of separate ones.
- Start with free LPC if — You are unsure — it shares Pro’s formatting engine, configs carry over if you upgrade, and it costs nothing to try.
Still deciding?
If your shortlist has narrowed to our two tiers rather than a vendor choice, LPC free vs LPC Pro walks through exactly where the paid line sits, feature by feature. And if you land on one of the free competitors instead, that is a perfectly good outcome — a chat plugin you never have to think about is the point, whoever built it.
